Space Settlement Reflection
In this project, I grew as a digital artist by learning video editing skill. I had known a little bit about video editing before this project but I had never used it for anything. We used Windows Movie Maker, which I had never used. I had only used iMovie in middle school, but Movie Maker was not super complicated to figure out. Doing the voiceovers was kind of hard, putting B roll over our recordings because we had to close the program and open up a separate file with Movie Maker to separate the audio from the video. Then we had to bring it back to the other video. We had to do this completely on the desktops in Roxy’s room because our laptops didn’t have anything for editing videos.
Circular motion can be used to simulate gravity this is because of centripetal force which pulls rotating objects towards the center of its rotation. When you are on the inside of a rotating object it feels like you are being pulled away from the center of the rotation because while the rotating object is being acted upon by centripetal force and centrifugal force which counteract each other you are only being affected by centrifugal force which is pulling you away from the center of rotation.
Center of gravity can be used to keep settlements balanced by placing thrusters in positions where they will equally affect all sides of the settlement this makes traveling in a straight path much easier.
Torque can be used to create circular motion which can be used to create artificial gravity.
Newton's first law can be used for traveling in space because there is no gravity or air resistance to slow down the ship so when a ship accelerates it will continue in the same direction at the same speed until another force that acts on it.
Adaptability was my greatest strength in this project because we didn’t realize how little time we had until a couple of days before the exhibition. I stayed after school for a couple of hours one day. I told Roxy that I needed some support and she helped us a lot with making the video. In the end, it was not very good because even though I had an idea in my head, I didn’t do a good job communicating with my group members. They had a different vision of how it should be, so I just went along with it, but then at the end we realized we didn’t have some of the physics concepts that we needed in it, so we had to go back and re-do a bunch of stuff. I already knew to look at the rubric beforehand, but I didn’t want to just tell them what to do.
In the future, when I’m in a group project, I need to communicate better so that we all have the same idea about what we’re doing. This will help the whole group so that we’re all on the same page about what we need to do. My other group members spent a lot of time working on details that would be important if we were actually going to start a settlement but wasn't very useful for our video. This could have been prevented if I had committed what we needed in our video.
